Gogatsu wa Hanarokushou no Madobe Kara
In May, from the Window with Emerald Green*
song by Yorushika (n-buna, suis)
I felt in my chest that the summer ending Was all part of my imagination An empty classroom, curtains swaying in the wind That summer when I looked up to the sky with you Forever hung just above my head Goodbye I choked back a verdant breath, tears are like emerald green1 If I just stay silent, then it’ll be gone already I feel pretty stupid You have to remember! 思い出せない、と頭が叫んだ ならばこの痛みが魂だ それでも それでも聞こえないというなら “I can’t remember,” I screamed inside my head If that’s how it is, then this pain is my soul And yet, and yet, if you say you can’t hear me 愛想笑いの他に何も出来ない 君と夏を二人過ごした想い出を 笑われたって黙っている I can’t do anything but force a smile Even when the memories of the summer we spent together Are laughed at, I just stay silent Quit laughing! It’s pretty clear what we’re worth If I were to compare this to anything, I’d say it’s the soul Even though it’s tough just staying silent, I feel pretty stupid Oh, just say something back! Unable to say anything back, I walked alone Being completely singled out, I was left behind And yet, and yet I still can’t remember? Goodbye I choked back a verdant breath, tears are like emerald green Just shut up, I get it! I can hear your voice 「思い出せ!」 “You have to remember!” 思い出したんだ、と喉が叫んだ この痛みが君の証明だ それでも それでも聞こえないというなら “I remembered,” I screamed with all my throat This pain is my proof of you And yet, and yet, if you say you can’t hear me
Notes: * About the title: 花緑青 (hanarokushou), commonly known as Paris Green or Emerald Green, is a beautiful green pigment that is also highly toxic, similarly to Scheele’s Green, which has a history of numerous poisoning accidents and causing death among people. 1 In Amy’s letters to Elma, he explains that tears are a “poison,” just like Emerald Green. 青々 aoao is a word that means “verdant”, and may be standing in for the Emerald Green. Also, 息を呑む iki wo nomu (literally swallow a breath) means to gasp, to have one’s breath taken away, to be at a loss for words, etc. In the song it likely refers to Amy being unable to say anything
