Notes: * About the title: おどりゃんせ Odoryanse is a more old-fashioned, casual form of おどりなさい odorinasai (please dance). The song also takes a lot of inspiration from “Tōryanse,” a children’s song from the Edo-period. ¹ In the Japanese version of hide and seek, kakurenbo, the ogre is the one catching other players. The same as being "it". ² Line originally from Tōryanse. “Going in is easy, but returning is scary” ³ Reference to a proverb 井の中の蛙大海を知らず (the frog in the well knows nothing of the great ocean) ⁴ iro ha niohoheto (iro wa nioedo in more modern Japanese) is the first line of the Iroha Uta, a poem using each character of the Japanese syllabary exactly once.
